Nestled on the edge of San Francisco Bay near the Sausalito Ferry pier, Books by the Bay is one of the anchors of the local community. Walking into the shop immediately tells you that this is a place for local book readers, not just another formula-driven chain bookstore. It’s a vibrant hub for book fans where good books and local culture mix in their own tasty blend of reading enjoyment.
The store is the brainchild of Cheryl Popp, a long-time Sausalito resident with a passion for books and an award-winning career in journalism, marketing communications and a stint as a radio talk show host. When a Marin County book chain elected to close their Sausalito store on this site, Cheryl was one of the community leaders who expressed concern at the loss of “our” bookstore. Instead of just talking about it, she took over the business and doubled down on its focus on local readers.
As they say on their website, “There is nothing like holding a real book in your hand. Or talking to a bookseller who is passionate about books and can take you on a tour of every bookshelf in the shop.”
Sausalito Books by the Bay is respected for its popular author reading events, which draw both local and visiting authors. These readings offer a unique opportunity for readers to engage with authors, discover new books, and participate in lively discussions. The store also hosts a range of events, from children’s story time sessions to language classes and even food and drink tastings.
The bookstore’s dedication to the community is evident through its partnership with Literacy by the Bay, a non-profit organization, to support literacy and education in the area.
To find Books by the Bay after arriving by ferry: As you exit the pier, turn right and walk along the lane of the parking lot that runs along the bay for half a block. Continue straight onto Humboldt St. (where the tour buses park when they come to Sausalito) and walk for one block. Books by the Bay will be on your right.
