55 Liberty Ship Way #1A, Sausalito
2 bedrooms, 2 baths $1,195,000
Finally, a Sausalito Floating Home that Checks All the Boxes
Even the 0ne labeled, “Steam Shower!”
Sometimes in life you have to choose between “Location! Location! Location!” and “Convenience, Space and Features.” Not with this Sausalito floating home.
This time you can have it all.
Located at the upscale Blue Water Yacht Harbor in the historic Marinship area, this home has open-water views of the bay and great vistas in all directions. And from your top-of-the-world rooftop deck you’ll be able to lean back, relax and enjoy every inch of those 360-degree panoramas.
This might even be your live/work hideaway, where you wake up every morning feeling like you’re on vacation and your home office has a view of the bay.
Expansive windows on both floors let you watch the constant activity on the bay and inside the harbor, with a design that blurs the line between indoor and outdoor living. The wood-burning fireplace is framed by windows that provide 180-degree views of the water, boats and hills. Large skylights bring shafts of sunshine streaming into the room.
The steam shower in the newly remodeled cedar-paneled bathroom looks like it came from the Captain’s quarters on a Federation starship. (Please click on the thumbnails below to see large, detailed photos.) Be forewarned, however, that this home also features a graceful and modern jetted bathtub, which presents a difficult choice: “Do I relax with steam in the shower or massaging currents in the tub?”
Shall we check off still more boxes? A beautiful modern kitchen, where the large island features a stunning black walnut countertop for casual dining. Gleaming natural wood floors. A dining room that can hold a full-size table for dinner parties. A compact washer and dryer. A second, covered private deck. Gated entry to the parking lot. A 5-minute walk to the beach.
Wait, the beach? Yes, Schoonmaker Beach is a sandy, protected spot on the shore of San Francisco Bay, surrounded by a yacht harbor. It’s a popular spot for launching kayaks, playing in the sand, and cooling off in the gentle waters.

This 2-bedroom, 2-bath floating home is made for entertaining. Your guests can enjoy cocktails and conversation on the expansive top deck — it even has space for container gardening. Then you’ll bring them inside for dinner in your ample dining room. Finally, you’ll gather around the wood-burning fireplace in the living room to share old memories and make new ones.
Where many homes have open views of either San Francisco Bay or Mt. Tamalpais, this vessel has both the water and the Mt. Tam vistas. Another view you’ll like will be the one in your windshield each time you arrive home: two dedicated parking places in a gated parking area! Around here, though, you won’t always use your car. You can walk to community events, or paddle to Waldo Lagoon concerts or to Sausalito’s waterfront restaurants in just a few minutes.
The home is located in a deep-water berth just off of historic Liberty Ship Way, the heart of a bustling shipyard 80 years ago. It could serve as an amazing live-work space (as shown in the photos below), or could be used as a unique and beautiful pied a terre.
Multiple highly-rated restaurants lie within a 5-minute walk or less, including community landmarks like Fred’s Place (with its legendary French toast), Saylor’s Restaurant and Bar (a favorite of musician Sammy Hagar) and Le Garage French Restaurant (where you can speak nothing but French all evening as you enjoy authentic cuisine). A 5 minute drive brings you to downtown Sausalito and its charming waterfront restaurants and shops.

The Area
This beautiful Floating Home is berthed in the heart of Sausalito’s historic Marinship area, just north of San Francisco and the Golden Gate Bridge in Marin County, California. This is the town where Otis Redding wrote the classic song, “Sittin’ on the Dock of the Bay” in 1967, making this one of the most prestigious houseboat addresses in the world.
65 years ago movie star Sterling Hayden and philosopher Alan Watts held their versions of the Paris salons of Gertrude Stein, Ernest Hemingway, Pablo Picasso and F. Scott Fitzgerald in this area. Although those large events — and the bohemian vessels where they were held — are now long gone, residents still entertain neighbors and host discussions on a smaller, more intimate scale.
Today the neighborhood is a fascinating mix of people, with residents ranging from artists to entrepreneurs and from pilots to interior designers.
A convenience store is within a 5-minute walk, and a supermarket is less than a 5 minute drive away. A shopping center anchored by a Target (and a Starbucks) and a regional transit hub for bus service are within a 10-minute drive to the north.
A short bike ride to the north leads to the entrance to the Mill Valley-Sausalito Multi-Use Path, which takes you to the base of Mt. Tamalpais. To the south you can ride through Sausalito and across the Golden Gate Bridge to San Francisco.
