Going to a beach on the lee shore inside the Bay is not the same as going to a Pacific Ocean beach on the coast, where sizable waves pound in even at the calmest of times. When the beach is sheltered inside the protective walls of a marina the waters are even calmer. If you’re looking for that kind of calm-water sandy beach experience, Schoonmaker Beach is a fabulous spot without the long drive out to the coast.
This is an especially popular place for families with little kids, since the gentle Bay waters are perfect for shallow water play in the sand.
Schoonmaker Beach is also a popular launch point for kayakers and paddle boarders, and you’ll sometimes also hear it called Liberty Ship Beach (since it’s on Liberty Ship Way, inside the grounds of the old Marinship shipyards) and Kayak Beach (since, well, people launch kayaks there!).
Note: On Google Maps Schoonmaker Beach is incorrectly labeled as “Sausalito Beach.” If you zoom in on the map below and use the satellite button you’ll see how the beach is nestled into the heart of Schoonmaker Marina.
