The Larkspur Ferry Terminal
The Larkspur Ferry terminal is pictured at the top of the page as seen from the deck of the ferry as we waited to disembark one evening. It’s operated by Golden Gate Ferry, a division of the Golden Gate Bridge Highway and Transportation District. No other services sail from this pier, and it serves only the Ferry Building in San Francisco.
Insiders Tip: In bad weather always wear a good coat and bring rain gear if traveling through the Larkspur Terminal. Although the terminal’s design has been praised for its beauty and won academic architecture honors, its roof is so high and angled that rain can blow in on passengers from most spots at the “building” apart from the small glass-walled areas. These aggravating lateral rains are amplified by wind currents that flow beneath the “roof” (sarcasm intentional) and above the poor souls waiting by the pier. Yes, there are the small fully enclosed areas, but they hold only a fraction of a ferry-full of passengers.
The terminal, which cost three times as much as its original budget, was so much more effective as a sculpture than as a building that public criticism poured down on architect Jacques de Brer and on the Bridge District when it was first opened. Its dishwasher-like talents (disguised by the current super-drought) remain largely unchanged today, since the added enclusures are so small.
In the end the architect and the Bridge District each insisted that the other party was the one who wanted a completely open design and that the problems weren’t their fault. There was no lawsuit to bring out the relevant documents so we may never know whom to blame for generations of cold, wet and frustrated travelers.
