Distance from San Francisco to Sausalito CA
There are different ways to answer that question:
Making the trip by boat it’s about a 30-minute ride on the ferry from either The Ferry Building on the Embarcadero in San Francisco, or from Pier 39 / Pier 41 at Fisherman’s Wharf.
Going via the Golden Gate Bridge involves crossing the second longest suspension bridge in the Western Hemisphere, but that part of the journey can be measured in different ways. The southern approach to the Golden Gate Bridge is in San Francisco and the northern end is in the Sausalito Zip Code, so in that respect the distance is the length of the Golden Gate Bridge. You can also…
- Walk across the Golden Gate Bridge from San Francisco’s Presidio to the Fort Baker area in Sausalito
- Rent a bike and ride it across the Golden Gate Bridge, then return from Sausalito to San Francisco on the ferry
- Drive across the Golden Gate Bridge (though — as cool as that drive is — that’s not nearly as fun as the choices above!)
From the hotels around Union Square in San Francisco to Sausalito it’s about a 9 mile (15 km.) drive across the Golden Gate Bridge (see map below). With no traffic it’s less than a 30-minute trip, but during commute hours it can be over an hour.
From SFO San Francisco Airport to Sausalito CA it’s about a 40 minute drive with light traffic via car, Uber/Lyft or taxi. When traffic is bad the 25-mile (40 km.) trip can be over an hour.
Finally, “as the crow flies” it’s about 6.5 miles (10 km.) from central San Francisco to our downtown.
However you choose to make the trip, as part of a family that’s been here for over 115 years I admit I’m prejudiced about what you’ll find in Sausalito. I love the killer views, active sports, great dining and nice people. Once you visit here I hope you’ll feel the same way!
