Editorial: In Appreciation of Walter Cronkite
Far larger publications than OurSausalito.com are issueing memorials to Walter Cronkite, who passed away this week at age 92.
Some members of our editorial team heard Cronkite's famous broadcasts of President Kennedy's assassination, of the moon landing, the extensive coverage of the Watergate hearings and the ultimate resignation of President Nixon, among hundreds of other topics.
To us, Cronkite represented "journalism done right," an attitude that works as well in New Media as it does in print. He separated news and editorial, and presented news in the most impartial manner possible. He double checked facts before he presented stories. He believed that getting it right was more important than getting the ratings… and was in fact the best way to get the most valuable readers. All those qualities remain invaluable today.
Thank you, Mr. Cronkite, for showing us how things should be done.
