Galilee Harbor Maritime Day Celebrates Nature, Houseboats and People August 1

This annual event features a maritime flea market, maritime booths, music with Fiver Brown and the New Speedway Boogiemen, food, boat tours and a mood of celebrating nature, the harbor and the people all at the same time. Master wooden boat-builders will give demos of their traditional craft, and you can tour the 1906 antinque sailing ship the Polaris.

One environmental highlight of the day is the Marsh Walk with US Army Corps of Engineers (the people who run the Bay Model) Ranger Linda, who will share all about Galilee Harbor's wetland restoration project. Walkers will get to engage in hands on wetland activities (and know that what you're doing is not harming the marsh), receive a bird checklist, and learn about water safety and how resident humans are living in harmony with resident birds.

The Galilee Harbor Community Association, which organizes the annual event, claims the fame of being the only local marina where every resident lives full-time on their boat. Most are artists drawn by the cooperative nature of the community, and the marina was organized with the goal of preserving a working floating home community matched with land-based marine services.

Other sponsors include The Richardson's Bay Maritime Association, Lagunitas Brewing Company and the Spaulding Wooden Boat Center.
