Sausalito Police Warn of New Burglary Scam
On October 28 the Sausalito Police Department got a call from a resident who thought they were dealing with a discount carpet cleaning service… and then realized they were dealing with a burglar. Here's the text of the story as reported by Sausalito PD:
A resident was contacted by an electronic messaging service and told about a discount on carpet cleaning services. This resident made an appointment and was later called back and asked questions about the time and day the resident would be home and other similar questions.
On the day of the appointment, the suspect showed up in a vehicle which had no insignia or markings identifying it as a business vehicle. Only one worker arrived for the appointment. He entered the residence and attempted to gain access to other areas of the residence (the contract was for the entry way only) stating that he could clean more of the carpets for a discount.
When the resident inquired about the company, they were given inconsistent statements about the business location, name, and phone numbers.
The resident became suspicious of the situation and asked the suspect to leave. The resident then called the police.
Safety Reminders:
— Never be afraid to ask for references regarding any business you did not initiate contact with.
— Check with the Better Business Bureau and other like companies to confirm the legality or history of a business.
– If you think a business is not legitimate, don't take the risk and choose a different business. First reactions are usually the right ones.
