Time to Make Brunch, Lunch or Dinner Reservations for Mother's Day in Sausalito
May 9, 2010 is still a month away and no, we have not gone mad, thank you. For many restaurants Mother's Day is the busiest day of the year. And since Sausalito in May is a delightful place to be, people flock to our top restaurants to gather with their families.
Those who call early get the view tables by the window that make Mom go "Wow!"
Those who procrastinate end up doing a panicked cycle of last-minute calls so they can get a good table at 3:00 PM or — worse — 9:15 PM.
So a word to the wise: to get those special window tables at Spinnaker or Scoma's, to sit on the deck at Horizons for brunch, to get that booth that will fit all six of you at the Buckeye, to sit at that little table right by the water at Le Garage or Fish, to be on the sidewalk at Poggio or Il Piccolo Teatro, to have Mom feel like an Iron Chef judge at Murray Circle, to let her have that sushi you can only get in Japan at Sushi Ran, or to have them make Mom her favorite burrito with her own unique combination of Indian and Mexican ingredients at Avatar's, you have to call now.
Yes, that was the longest sentence of 2010 here at OurSausalito.com. How can you argue with extremism in support of Motherhood?
Not sure which place to pick? Here are some suggestions based on Mom's tastes, but these are only some of the great places in town:
Formal dining with a fabulous view: The Spinnaker, set on a pier jutting out into the Bay, with a dream view of the San Francisco skyline. Tell them you'll wait longer to get a window table.
Sushi: Sushi Ran, the biggest regional draw of Sausalito restaurants, and a perennial top Bay Area dining star. Want smaller and more intimate? Try Sweet Ginger.
She has a bumper sticker that says, "I'd rather be in Italy!": Poggio Trattoria. If you go for lunch, the sidewalk seating takes us right back to Italy. If you go other times you'll have wonderful, authentic Italian food from a sophisticated menu that changes every day.
She has a bumper sticker that says, "I'd rather be judging on Iron Chef!":Murray Circle, newly crowned with a Michelin Star, will be a hit to the wallet but a gourmet treat. Make sure to ask how to get a view table.
She loves the new and different: Avatar's, a mix of Indian and Mexican cuisine that is a perennial favorite ranked highly on our restaurant surveys. This place has fanatical fans.
She likes small plates: Il Piccolo Teatro, new this year, combines elegant indoor and outdoor seating, small plates and a nice wine list. And you can order the kids a burger from Hamburgers next door and they'll bring it to your table!
She's a California Girl and she wants California Cuisine: Buckeye Roadhouse, one of the top-rated local places. Great salads, and the meat that comes out of the brick smoker in the back is to die for.
She was here for the Summer of Love in '67: She'll enjoy fabulous views and wax nostalgic at Horizons, in the same spot as the old Trident Restaurant that was an epicenter of the San Francisco Rock scene in the 60's and 70's.
A deli sandwich by the Bay and just walking along the shore, none of this fancy restaurant stuff: Venice Gourmet, with wonderful sandwiches and great variety. OK, they don't take reservations, but get there early to stake out one of those precious sidewalk tables with the Big Bay View!
A light meal is fine, but it's all about the Wine List: Wellington's Wine Bar, new this year, is next door to a cooking school and gets the benefit of that expert kitchen.
