Radio Sausalito
Starting with a mighty one tenth of a watt of power (the most you can have without an FCC license), Westerling’s non-profit project of passion initially served just a few blocks at the north end of Caledonia. As a commercial-free community broadcaster focused on sharing jazz music and community news, he soon drew the attention of City government.
Instead of hassling him for fees and licenses, the City hailed him for being free and conscientious.
How does one tenth of a watt reach much of Sausalito and points nearby? A series of “repeaters” scattered through the valleys of Sausalito and in the Houseboat Community (plus one on the western side of Belvedere) mimic the music “over the hill” instead of having to broadcast from one massive tower.
Recently the coverage expanded dramatically when Radio Sausalito — after overcoming a series of bureaucratic obstacles — was added to Comcast Cable channel 26 for all of Marin County.
In recent years, the advent of Internet broadcasting and podcasts has meant that some of Radio Sausalito’s content is available not only in Sausalito and Marin, but also anywhere in the world. OurSausalito.com readers in Paris, Madrid, Singapore and Sydney can sample Sausalito’s Jazz and Blues By the Bay concerts, which the station records and rebroadcasts every summer.
In addition to playing Jazz 24 hours a day, the station also offers other programs that cover a wide range of local topics.
