Golden Gate Market Deli
For tired bike riders and walkers who are crossing the Golden Gate Bridge on bikes or who are walking from the Golden Gate to Sausalito, this is the first little market and deli you come to in Sausalito. It’s only a few blocks before you reach downtown Sausalito, but we’ve seen lots of walkers and bike riders stagger inside Golden Gate Market in a desperate search for food and water.
Fortunately, the little deli in the left rear corner of the store makes great sandwiches. A lot of the residents of Old Town and Hurricane Gulch (the local nickname for this neighborhood) see Golden Gate Market as an institution. After an ownership change and a major remodel the shopping experience is even better, and I wish it were this nice when we and other family members lived in Old Town.
Don’t be confused by street names: Golden Gate Market sits on a four-block stretch of the main road through Sausalito that most people think of as Bridgeway, but which for these four blocks is actually called 2nd St. Don’t think you’ve got the wrong place just because of the address. This is the first little market you see as you first drive into Sausalito from the Golden Gate Bridge, sitting on the corner where the road turns right to run along the edge of the Bay and the view opens up and takes your breath away.
This bench, half a block downhill of the Market, is a great place to eat one of those Golden Gate Market sandwiches, as you can see from the bag (and my lunch of a turkey sandwich) in the foreground!
Something else that people should know about Golden Gate Market Deli? Seen any French Legionnaires staggering in the front door with camels in tow after marching across the food-desert Golden Gate Bridge from San Francisco and craving a Gatorade?
