If you travel to San Francisco on weekend mornings via the Golden Gate Bridge, be ready for slower than usual traffic this coming Sunday morning July 27 from 6:00 AM to 9:00 AM.or 10:00 AM due to the ruinning of the San Francisco Marathon.
Bridge parking lots will be closed from midnight Sunday morning until 10:00 AM, and you cannot drop off ruinners anywhere at the Bridge since there will be no place to stop safely.
The Golden Gate Bridge and Doyle Drive lanes will be configured for the race from 1:00 AM to 6:00 AM, which also may impact people returning late from Saturday night work and activities.
From 6:00 AM to 9:00 AM there will be two southbound lanes and one northbound lane, with the remaining lanes devoted to runners and a safety buffer.
Bus stops in the Golden Gate Bridge parking lots will be out of use and blocked off during the preparation of the race lanes, and will not open again until 10:00 AM Sunday morning.
I crossed the Bridge one year during the Marathon without having planned for its impact, heading to SFO for a flight. In that particular case the delays at the northern entrance to the Bridge were short and the impact was small. Your experience, however, may differ if a lot of cars all approach the Bridge at once during the race.
A map of the road closures is here.
