The disappearance of circuses with elephants, lions and tigers (due to issues of animal cruelty) has opened the door for the return of the circuses that were popular in Europe before the time of P.T. Barnum. These centuries-old performances grew out of classic traditions like the Italian Commedia dell’arte, which mixed comedic theatre, improvisation and gymnastics.
.
If that sounds interesting then you’re in for a treat, because the Flynn Creek Circus is bringing a new kind of all-human big-top theater to Sausalito’s Marinship Park, home of the annual Sausalito Art Festival. They offer traditional European-style tightrope walkers, aerialists, jugglers and acrobats, along with very modern comedy. We’re proud that Flynn Creek, which is home-grown just north of us in Mendocino County, has become a sponsor of OurSausalito.com.
Featuring an international cast of performers, Flynn Creek Circus calls its style ‘Inter-Active,’ fusing comedy, improvisation and amazing athletic and gymnastic skills to create a completely new kind of circus-theater. Every performance is different, taking on a unique identity as audience choices inspire the cast to execute impressive (and often ridiculous) stunts appropriate for all ages.
.
Critic Judy Spinelli of Spectacle Magazine wrote, “Flynn Creek displays a tantalizing instinct for balancing a show to include just the right amount of classical elements to please purists, while including original experiments that are a hallmark of the contemporary circus scene.” It’s an exciting recipe for audience fun.
