“Ask Annie” is our page where readers ask questions about Sausalito. We archive the questions here by category so that they form an FAQ for all things Sausalito. Q: When we visited San Francisco I remember that it was foggy a lot of the time. Does Sausalito have the same fog as San Francisco? A: Sausalito does not get as much fog as San Francisco, since we’re protected by the cliffs of the Marin Headlands. Sausalito’s downtown areas often are sunny when San Francisco is foggy, but the fog does cling to the hilltops here most afternoons and occasionally we do get fog at sea level. Walking across the Golden Gate Bridge or taking the Ferry often involves going through at least some patches of fog, so dress in layers for those trips. We have a page on Weather and What to Wear in Sausalito that will give you more information. As I’m writing this in springtime I’m looking out the window of my office and the sky is a bright blue with just a few pale clouds. But when I turn and look up the hill there’s a bank of fog, unable to get any farther into the Bay because of the warmth but unwilling to retreat. The (expensive) houses on top of the hill are in that fog right now. The (also expensive) houses just downhill from them are in bright sunshine in what’s called “the banana belt,” with wisps of fog blowing overhead as it dissipates in the heat.
