I was driving down 101 and about to take the Sausalito exit a couple of days ago when I saw a CalTrans worker standing precariously on the back of a truck. He was attaching a sign to a post at the southern end of the Richardson Bay overpass by the Highway 1 exit.
Apart from fearing for his life if someone rear-ended his truck on the shoulder, I also saw this as a happy surprise: it means the Muir Woods Shuttle is starting service for 2014.
Route 66 connects the Manzanita and Pohono parking lots to Muir Woods, while Route 66F serves the Sausalito Ferry.
Better yet, when I checked I saw that the service that was originally scheduled to begin in May will now start on March 29, so Muir Woods visitors get an extra month of being able to avoid the packed parking lots and long walks down a narrow road filled with cars. And Tam Valley residents get fewer frustrated drivers speeding past their doors.
This is part of a pattern over the last year: the service has been extended beyond the scheduled end date at the end of the year, and now is starting early. Now that's a pattern we don't see very often!
