Event: If you are looking for a chance to raise money for the
seals, leisurely hike 2 miles or race 4 miles in one of the most scenic
national parks, or simply to wear a fishy costume without arousing suspicion,
this is an event for you. On August 17th, The Marine Mammal Center
is hosting its 29th annual Run for the Seals. So ask your community
for donations for The Marine Mammal Center.
The money that The Marine Mammal Center raises will be going
towards the wellness and care for seals and sea lions in need. Your efforts
will be appreciated amongst the seal community!
Who to Invite: Everyone.
This is going to be awesome. There were over 1300 participants last year, so
don’t miss out. Bring your friends, family, coworkers, and dogs. Strollers are
fine, but dogs must be on leashes, and preferably in costume.
What to Wear: If
you wear an ocean-themed costume, you’ll get a prize. Make sure you’ll be
comfortable in your costume on either a 2 mile walk or a 4 mile run. Also wear a stopwatch if you want to know your
race time. If you will be joining the walk, bring a small camera for memories
of the views. As the event is on a Saturday, the construction projects along
Bunker Rd will be dormant, however the trail might be dustier than usual; wear
tennis shoes that can get a little dusty.
Sign-up: Only 1,500
tickets. You can sign up online. Online sign-ups are charged 5%
extra, but are also given a 2013 Run for the Seals T-shirt and a ticket to the
Aquarium of the Bay. Note: Ages 4 and under will not be given T-shirts.
However T-shirts will be for sale online and at the fundraiser depending on
availability.
Schedule:
7:00 AM — Check in and Race Day Registration opens.
8:30 AM – The roads between Rodeo Beach and Bunker Rd will
be closed for the race until noon.
9:00 AM – Race and walk begin.
11:00 AM – As soon as the race ends, the roads will open.
Until then, no cars may leave.
11:30 AM – Award Ceremony
Parking + Check in: Parking
is best done between 7:00 AM and 8:15 AM. If you would rather secure a spot
closest to check in at Rodeo Beach, we recommend you arrive early. The roads close
at 8:30 AM and the furthest parking lot is a 20 minute walk from the check in
area and start line at Rodeo Beach.
The Race: If you
choose to race, you’ll be running from Rodeo Beach on 4 miles of trail to the
Center. There are a few hills.
The Walk: The
hike won’t be easy, but definitely beautiful and there is no hurry. The ocean
will be within sight and there will be stops along the way for drinks, things
to learn, and Kodak moments.
Prizes: Will be awarded to those wearing costumes, 4 categories of the
winners of the race, and whichever human or dog has the best costume, and
everyone who raised $25+.
After the prizes have been
distributed, you can stay at The Marine Mammal Center for tours, stories, an
understanding of what The Marine Mammal Center does, and free food and drinks.
Don’t forget to pick up your Run for the Seals T-shirt and ticket to the
Aquarium of the Bay.
