Music at the 2012 Sausalito Art Festival
In 2009 it was the Woodstock reunion at the Sausalito Art Festival, and this year we’re getting the British Invasion. No, we’re not discussing the War of 1812, but rather the invasion of 1963, led by the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Herman’s Hermits, Petula Clark, the Yardbirds, Dusty Springfield and many others.
Two of those seminal bands, Herman’s Hermits starring (former 1980’s MTV vid jock) Peter Noone and the Yardbirds, will anchor the Sunday show.
Other eras and areas are represented as well, including:
— 1990’s (Smash Mouth)
— 1980’s (a return appearance by the Fixx)
— 1970’s (America, who recorded some of their hits here in Sausalito and who happen to be really nice guys)
— 1960’s San Francisco Rock/Folk/Pop (The Grass Roots and Dan Hicks. and please don’t send us angry mail about the LA version of the Grass Roots that preceded the SF version, or how we’re not doing justice to the diverse styles of the very talented Dan Hicks, who played with the Charlatans in the early local rock scene in Sausalito in the 1960’s).
Scroll down for videos of the headliners, and we have more (and different) videos on our Sausalito Art Festival page.

Here are more videos from some of this year’s headliners.
And, finally, Dan Hicks and the Charlatans, pioneers of the San Francisco sound that spawned the Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, Quicksilver Messenger Service, Big Brother and the Holding Company (with Janis Joplin) and many more. Little known today, in the late 1960’s the Charlatans routinely shared the stage — and billing — with those now-legendary acts and appeared regularly in Sausalito.
And, finally, we found this video of the Charlatans for fans of San Francisco Rock history, when they played at the Sausalito Art Festival 15 years ago:
