Record-Breaking Polar Circumnavigator Visits Sausalito
David Scott Cowper may not be as well known a name as Ferdinand Magellan or Sir Francis Chichester, but he has replicated their accomplishments "the hard way." All three men are famous for sailing around the world. Chichester and Cowper both did it solo… but Cowper takes the polar routes and accepts being trapped in pack ice as part of the job. He's been visiting Sausalito this week mid-way through his sixth solo trip around the world, and anchored off the Sausalito Yacht Club near the Ferry pier.
His boat, the "Polar Bound" (a play on words on being icebound during the winter), is shown at anchor in Sausalito above in a photo by Contributing Editor Evaristo Buendia.
Among his many records, Cowper (at right in this photo, coming into Sausalito with friends) was the first to sail the Northwest Passage solo, progressing step by step over four years to finish the voyage in 1990.
You can read an excellent article about his career and his current voyage here.
