Bay Bridge Problem Delays Reopening Beyond 5 AM Tuesday
We don't know when it WILL reopen, but Caltrans has alerted Bay Area agencies that due to the repairs to fix the crack they found during the bridge inspection, the bridge will not reopen as scheduled at 5:00 AM Tuesday morning. Ironically, the huge swap-out swap-in project to create a detour in the bridge route came off without a hitch — the crack was found because (someone was smart enough to order) an inspection of the rest of the bridge while it was closed.
Local transit agencies are making very few changes, so count on a standard Tuesday mornign system under assault from very high traffic volumes. Updates we've received from the Bridge District are:
Golden Gate Bridge: There will be four southbound commute lanes into San Francisco beginning at 4:30 AM, and four northbound lanes out of San Francisco beginning at 3:30 PM. "Drivers should expect delays."
Golden Gate Transit: No extra bus service. "Riders should expect delays on the system given the additional traffic in the I-580 and US 101 corridors."
Golden Gate Ferry: Golden Gate Larkspur Ferry will add one high-capacity outbound voyage (715 passengers) departing Larkspur at 7:30 AM and arriving at the Ferry Building at 8:20 AM. Overflow parking will be available in the mall parking lot across Sir Francis Drake Blvd. Signs will be posted to identify the extra parking.
