Maltese Falcon Sailboat Reportedly Sold for $152M
Before our recent visit by the Attessa the big story about beautiful yachts on the Bay was last October’s visit by the Maltese Falcon, the largest working sailboat in the world. At the time we had not yet launched OurSausalito.com and were still a secret startup building the initial site. But Contributing Editor Sabine Stetson captured this memorable image, which I want to frame and put on my wall.
Now comes word that the ship’s owner, Tom Perkins of Venture firm Kleiner Perkins, has sold the vessel to an unnamed buyer for 90,000,000 British Pounds, or roughly $152,000,000. He was rumored to have spent $150 to $300 million building the vessel. You can fill in your own recession-related comment here.
You can follow the ship’s movements (it’s currently in Sardinia, the Italian island just south of Corsica) on this webpage to see the next time it comes back to Sausalito.
In the meantime I think I’ll just sit back and admire that Stetson photograph.
