Fourth Sea Lion Pup in Five Weeks Stranded on Bridgeway
July 16, 2009 – For the fourth time in five weeks, rescuers from the Marine Mammal Center have rescued a stranded sea lion pup on or near Bridgeway in Sausalito. Today's pup was found at about 3:00 A.M. this morning near the northern onramp to Highway 101 after a caller alerted Sausalito Police, who called the MMC. The previous three pups came ashore downtown.
Unlike the other stranded animals, the Center reported that this pop was not malnourished but may have some kind of neurological problem that drove it to come on shore.
This is part of a continuing pattern in which the number of sea lion strandings this year is running at double the 2008 rate. The photo below by Evaristo Buendia is from stranding number two in this five-week period, which took place on July 3.
