Sausalito Floating Homes Tour Set for Sept. 26
Why would we start telling you about this event over three months before it happens? Because it's one of the most coveted and hard-to-get tickets in Sausalito, and if you decide you want to go we want our subscribers to be first in line!
The 24th Sausalito Floating Homes Tour will take place on Saturday, September 26, 2009, from 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM. The self-guided tour takes visitors inside a dozen or more unique homes floating on San Francisco Bay. Docents from the Sausalito Floating Homes Assn. will answer questions and describe the hidden treasures of this waterfront community.
Featured floating homes include the Archangel X, a soaring A-frame “temple of light”; Monkey Sea, a “fun house” (as its name implies) filled with fanciful art; plus an end-of-the-dock home with slanting walls, trapezoidal windows and other unique contours that I could describe better if I'd paid more attention in my high school geometry class.
The tour begins at Kappas Marina, on Gate 6 Road off Bridgeway at the northern end of Sausalito. Kappas Green will also host free entertainment featuring local musicians throughout the day, so you'll be able to watch and hear a variety of highly talented artists. Food and drinks will be available for purchase from the Floating Homes Assn.
Past tours have attracted over 1,000 visitors from around the country. Advance reservations are necessary ($35 per person, which partially benefits various local nonprofits). For reservations, send a check and a self-addressed stamped envelope to the Floating Homes Association, P.O. Box 3054, Sausalito, CA 94966 or purchase online from the Floating Homes Assn. website ticket window. Further information is available by calling 415-332-1916.
“Virtual” versions of recent tours, complete with color photos, are available on the website of the Floating Homes Association.
The Floating Homes Tour is sponsored by the Floating Homes Association, a non-profit volunteer organization representing the owners and residents of floating homes within five Sausalito marinas.
