Sausalito Stories
Writers' Guidelines
Sausalito StoriesTM, our BenefictionTM based online Literary Magazine, is open to all writers. We do, however, have priorities that govern the work we accept and publish.
Our online fiction magazine features short stories and poetry that are by Sausalito authors, or that feature Sausalito prominently in their content.
We consider an author to be "Sausalito-based" if they live here, work here, or otherwise are a product of the area and can write with the deep authenticity of "a local." If we read a piece and "feel Sausalito" then it qualifies.
We strongly prefer being the location of the first-time publication of a piece, but will consider works that have appeared elsewhere if they meet our other criteria and the necessary rights are free and clear. Please do not take a story you have written that is set in Nashville, Nyack or New Orleans and edit it to place the tale in Sausalito. The local connection has to be organic and real.
We do not charge a reading fee for submissions. We do not pay for poems and stories used in Sausalito Stories, but will publish the author's name with his/her work.
We acquire only the right to publish the work online, and will place the author's copyright notice on the poem(s) or story. By submitting your work to OurSausalito.com and Sausalito Stories you are a) granting us the right, if we accept the work, to publish it on this website, and b) certifying to us that you own the copyright and all other necessary rights that you are granting us to publish the work.
Please do not submit more than ten (10) poems in a single email.
Short stories may be of any length, but we believe the format works best at or under 5,000 words.
If the editors accept a work and believe the BenefictionTM system will add to its reader interest, we will provide the author with suggested links and/or illustrations. The author will then have the option to use the system or not, and to accept or decline each image or link.
Works can be submitted electronically in Word, Rich Text or Text format (not PDF) in an attachment to an email sent to the site editors. Please include a cover email message (one page maximum) telling us about yourself. We do not accept paper submissions.
We will do our best to make decisions on all submissions within 90 days. Simultaneous submissions are permitted, but please inform us immediately if you sell a submitted piece elsewhere and need to withdraw it.
