The Pier 39 / Pier 41 Fisherman’s Wharf Ferry Terminal
(The Blue & Gold Terminal)
This terminal is operated by Blue & Gold Fleet, and it is one of the hubs of activity at San Francisco’s Fisherman’s Wharf.
Blue & Gold operates both commuter ferries (Sausalito in Marin, as well as Oakland, Alameda, Vallejo and more), and a variety of Bay Tour Cruises at this terminal. These tours of the Bay are primarily marketed to area visitors, but I was born in San Francisco and took my wife on one of those cruises when she first came to San Francisco to meet my parents.
The previous service to Tiburon and to Angel Island from the Blue and Gold terminal has been taken over by the public service operated by Golden Gate Ferry. You can click here for the Tiburon schedule and you can click here for Angel Island.
The Blue and Gold terminal is close to the site of the San Francisco terminal for the first Sausalito-San Francisco Ferry, a private company’s service that first sailed almost 150 years ago, in May, 1868. Commuters in that era must have been in great shape, because the cable car that goes over the steep hill from Fisherman’s Wharf to downtown San Francisco wasn’t built until 1888, 20 years after the ferry service began!
Muni and BART Connections
The Muni F Train stops at Stockton and Beach St., half a block from the Embarcadero next to Pier 39. From there the F Line allows you to travel to:
Pier 33, where the Alcatraz ferries are based
The Ferry Building at the foot of Market St., where the Golden Gate Ferries are based. The Embarcadero BART and Muni Station is across the street.
The Market at Powell St. stop, which is a few blocks from Union Square and many of the City’s largest hotels. There is also a major BART and Muni Station here.
