Sartaj India Cafe
Popular local Indian restaurant with a small, intimate dining room, good prices for this area. Customer base here is from local neighborhoods and nearby towns, and you can see by the survey rankings above that they’ve built a loyal customer base. You order at a counter, but once you sit down the feel here is like a regular classy little restaurant. There are also a couple of outside tables that are a great sidewalk dining spot in good weather.
The last few years have been turbulent for the family that runs Sartaj. First, a fire destroyed their apartment above the restaurant, and with it most of their belongings. They carried on from temporary housing, but ultimately sold to the local Lotus restaurant chain, which was operated by a family friend. The “Sartaj by Lotus” experiment failed, and the friends all agreed that the original owners would once again manage Sartaj themselves as part of the Lotus restaurant family. If you’re wondering, this kind of ego-free “do what’s right” is rare in business, and it’s a tribute to everyone involved.
So we are now back to the familiar Sartaj of India. Carry on, Sausalito!
