Marinship Park, Sausalito
Note: About half of the lawn areas of Marinship Park are currently being used as the site for a homeless encampment previously located in a section of Dunphy Park. The remaining lawn area (closest to The Bay Model) remains open for dog play and recreation, though I haven’t seen many people going there. You can follow the topic on the Sausalito city website here.
To most Bay Area residents Marinship Park, located next to the Bay Model, is known as the home of the Sausalito Art Festival, which brings thousands of people to Sausalito from all over the world each Labor Day weekend. The photo above shows what the Art Festival really looks like when all the trappings are stripped away!
To local residents Marinship Park is known for its public tennis courts, and its lawn plays host each summer to many area soccer teams. Its semi-fenced perimeter draws lots of dogs, tennis balls and dog owners.
During the winter the Marinship Park lawn here is closed, since it’s barely above sea level and doesn’t drain that well during the rainy season, and also to let the grass recover from the trauma of the Art Festival crowds and summer soccer league play. Although the park is near the shoreline, it’s separated from the water by a fence since it lies opposite the Army Corps of Engineers pier.
This is also a very popular dog walking spot for local pet owners. The daily pug parade is just one of many breeds you can appreciate walking along the Bay shore in this area. If you continue north along the shore from Marinship Park you’ll enter the smaller Shoreline Park, the southern border of which is a few yards across an office building parking lot from the northern edge of Marinship Park.
