Neighborhoods: Fort Baker in the GGNRA
If you don’t plan to drive, Big Bus Tours, a hop-on hop-off service, has the widest combined coverage of the Golden Gate Bridge and Sausalito, and has a stop at Fort Baker as well as downtown Sausalito and The Bay Model. This route allows you to visit many more spots listed in our Fun Things to Do in Sausalito page that are not in the downtown area. They run open-top double-decker buses when it’s warm and enclosed buses when it’s cold or raining. Note: Because of their enhanced services we sought them out and Big Bus Tours is now a sponsor of OurSausalito.
Fort Baker has a split personality:
- As a neighborhood of Sausalito at the southern edge of town, with a major hotel, restaurant, children’s museum, yacht harbor and spectacular views.
- As a former military base that has been converted into parklands, and which is still home to a critical Coast Guard rescue base.
- As a key portion of the GGNRA, the massive national park that spans northern San Francisco and southern & western Marin County.
.
Part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area (GGNRA) which covers over 38,000 acres, Fort Baker has one of the best views in the world in a location full of rich culture and history. Look up to your right and you’re looking up at one of the best views of the Golden Gate Bridge. Look to your left and you have beautiful views of Angel Island and Alcatraz. Look straight ahead and you have an incredible view across the bay at San Francisco. All in all, this is a spot definitely worth checking out.
Insiders Tip: It is often foggy and windy so we recommend bringing layers of warm clothes just in case it getschilly.
The site is also featured in Star Trek Universe with some of the buildings seen as buildings of the Starfleet Headquarters.
Parking: Parking is limited down by the pier, but is often available. There is also more parking just up the road by the buildings, and a few spots scattered on the dirt where where parking is permitted.
