Le Garage
Insiders Tip: Le Garage can be a little hard to find — most car and phone GPS apps will get you there (and we have a map below), and it’s definitely worth the effort once you’re sitting right by the edge of the Bay. The confusing streets are a byproduct of the fact that Le Garage is located in a neighborhood where the Bay was filled in to create the historic Marinship Shipyards in 1942 after the U.S. entered World War II.
Once you’re inside the Schoonmaker parking lot at the end of Liberty Ship Way, turn right and you’ll see the lot with the sign that says La Garage Bistro Parking. Park in the fenced lot and walk towards the Bay. Le Garage is at the end of the gray building you just drove past, right next to the water, which you’ll recognize from the photo above.
If you want to order in French, all the servers who have helped us have been fluent. Their Kobe Beef burger is fabulous. Le Garage really does have a roll-up garage door and concrete floors in the restaurant, and in nice weather the outdoor patio is a wonderful place to dine. Real French food from a real French chef (what a concept!) in a lovely harbor-view setting in the Schoonmaker office complex. On the high end in both food quality (Kobe beef) and price, despite the casual atmosphere. They also have a great selection of goodies to go with your morning coffee (to the delight of people in nearby offices), but be sure to get there early because the bakery treats do sell out a high percentage of the time.
Insiders Tip: If it’s not a sweltering hot day, bring a sweater or arrive early to ensure a seat in the sun. On many afternoons the breeze kicks up at the edge of the Bay, and if they have both of their (le) garage doors open the wind tunnel effect can make it quite chilly inside.
Something else that people should know about Le Garage? Did you go there early in their history when they were just Le Carport? Want to impress everyone with your mastery of French? Disagree with any of our suggestions? Please let us know!
