As we reported last week, there are significant changes in the traffic lanes at the toll plaza as you approach the Golden Gate Bridge from the south as of today.
The concrete barriers that separate the traffic coming up on the right from Park Presidio Blvd. / 19th Avenue (Highway 1) from the traffic entering from Doyle Drive (Highway 101) have been realigned in a major change.
If you're coming from the 19th Ave. Highway 1 Route, the only impact is to watch for people making crazy moves and trying to turn in front of you. A Muni bus even made that illegal turn this morning, as reported on KCBS Radio, almost creating an accident!
If you're coming from Doyle Drive and Highway 101, the last San Francisco exit before the Bridge (the one that leads to the South Parking Lot, Fort Point, and the tunnel under the Bridge), has been moved back by about a quarter mile.
A map of the changes is above. Drivers need to get into the right hand lane soon after traversing the new Doyle Drive tunnel, and watch carefully for where a new freeway exit in the concrete barriers will take cars right to access that same road to the parking lot.
This temporary alignment is only planned to continue for about a month, but that won't be a lot of solace to the drivers who miss the exit and have to cross the Golden Gate Bridge, turn around and pay a toll to return to San Francisco.
