Tapia Art Gallery
Sausalito CA 94965 415-332-6177
Website is here.
Although Bob and Rosemary Tapia have closed their downtown Gallery and now show their paintings by appointment, it’s worth the trouble to meet and talk with these warm and exceptionally talented people. If you enjoy seeing “painters’ paintings” this should be very high on your list in Sausalito.
Tapia Art Gallery: The Details
When you write for a website you try to retain a journalistic perspective. But visiting the Tapia Gallery is simply one of the nicest gallery experiences I’ve had. Not just in Sausalito, but in San Francisco, New York, Laguna Beach, Hawaii, Hong Kong, London, Paris, Rome, Venice, Florence… I’ve been lucky to see all those places and yet this gallery still feels special.
I really love the work, and when you walk in and talk with someone, you’re meeting one of the artists, not a sales person. Add to that the fact that the Tapias are genuinely nice and interesting, and you can understand why we have bought several paintings here. (one is just to the right 0of my monitor as I write this, more are in my home office and upstairs rooms.
The Tapias have been painting and selling their paintings in Sausalito since 1974. As artist-owned galleries go, that puts their gallery in a class with Old Ironsides and the Liberty Bell. The History Channel may show up one day to do a special, and the Sausalito Chamber of Commerce held an event just to celebrate their 30th anniversary in town.
By the way, the black-and-white photos above have none of the vibrant colors of their paintings. Bob paints in oils and specializes in (stunning) seascapes and richly colored abstracts.
Rosemary Tapia paints primarily in watercolors but also does some oils and acrylics. She does beautiful landscapes and still lifes, especially florals.
