Pinestreet Papery (Moved)
42 Caledonia St., Sausalito CA 94965 415-332-0650
Website is here, and remains live for the new location in Bolinas.
We are sad to report that Pinestreet Papery lost its lease and has closed its doors in Sausalito, though it later re-opened in Bolinas in West Marin. This is a real loss to the community, and we are exploring ways to sue Bolinas to force them to return one of our favorite Sausalito shops.
[Historical text — now moved] This may be the most unique and ever-changing small gift shop in Sausalito. Pinestreet is absolutely positively the most fun stationery store any of our editors can recall seeing just about anywhere. This place is worth walking the four extra blocks or so you might cover to come see it, and we have been known to go way out of our way to drop in and see what the heck they have arrayed on those tables this time. If you like a) stickers, b) holidays, or c) stickers about holidays, this is your new favorite haunt. Oh, yeah… kids will like it too!
Our “Hidden Sausalito” articles are about places that only the locals know about, Sausalito institutions that you can visit on your trip where you’ll experience the real local scene. In this case we have a shop called Pinestreet Papery that is not on Pine St., but instead (nearby) on that Haven of Hidden Treasures, Caledonia St.
People from the Midwest and East who move to California sometimes say, “I miss the change of seasons.” This shop is an antidote for that feeling. It’s also just plain fun to visit. If the kids are with you they may not want to leave.
There are all sorts of cards and wrappings and little gifts. I wanted to place it in our Hidden Trasures section because this is one of those rare places that really does have items that you have not seen everywhere else.
I wandered in there one day before Easter last year and found these fantastic high quality chocolate Easter Bunnies in metal tins. When I turned over the tin to see the price (I admit I don’t remember exactly what it was) I braced myself for a “designer” number but instead saw a reasonable tag. I bought one for every member of my immediate family, and they had three varieties to choose from.
At Christmas time they have decorations you didn’t already pick over three blocks away.
If you or the kids love stickers, this place will be a stop you remember fondly for a long time. They claim that they may have the world’s largest selection of Mrs. Grossman’s stickers. I don’t know who Mrs. Grossman is, but if she makes these stickers I know I already like her.
If you’re spending a day wandering through the shops in Sausalito, this Hidden Treasure is well worth the extra walk. It’s only about 3 blocks north of the Casa Madrona Hotel, on a street that has more of our Hidden Treasures nearby.
