Cavallo Point Lodge
This unique property was created as part of turning the old military base Fort Baker into a national park within the Golden Gate National Recreation Area (GGNRA), renovating old officers quarters and adding new buildings. Some visitors prefer to stay in the new, modern buildings while others prefer the older officers’ quarters with their vintage character. Be sure to pick the one that sounds best for you.
The photo above was taken by a hotel guest and shows what the view from one of the “view rooms” looks like (thanks to Susan Tatro for the image). They’re very dog-friendly (a big deal for us), rooms have gas fireplaces or free-standing stoves, and you’re inside a beautiful national park right next to the Golden Gate Bridge and have great options for walks, hikes and bike rides.
Major emphasis here on recycling and sustainability. The restaurants are Sula, a high-end Iron-Chef-style magnet for foodies, and Farley, a classy cafe.
Note: Many rooms are on the second or third floor of buildings with no elevators.
A great choice if you want peaceful surroundings, but “Uber/Lyft distance” (too far to walk for many people) from the Sausalito ferry unless you plan an extended outing.
Something else that people should know about Cavallo Point Lodge? After hundreds of thousands of years of tectonic shifts could it become the Cavallo Point Dislodged? Disagree with any of our suggestions? Please let us know!
